African-American Women and Their Babies at a Higher Risk for Pregnancy and Birth Complications

Prematurity/low birth weight is the most frequent leading cause of death for African-American infants. The infant mortality rate among African-American infants is at a 2.4 high due to preterm birth. Preterm birth is when a baby is born before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Preterm infants who live beyond their first year suffer from severe neurologic disability, cerebral palsy and intellectual disabilities.

African-American women are twice as likely to deliver prematurely as Caucasian women. Preterm birth can lead to lifelong illnesses. The March of Dimes developed the Honey Child Prenatal Education Program with specific needs for African-American women. This program combines educational, experiential and environmental activities designed to support positive lifestyle choices that result in improved health outcomes.
